What I do when I'm not a photographer

...which really is about 99% of my time. It seems like my photo blog makes me out to be this all consumed camera-bionically-attached-to-my-eye type of person. I am a Mom. It's what I am doing most of my day. I often don't get things done as quickly, but that's OK, because now I will show you a bit of my day, my way.

Read books wearing edible jewelry that happens to match our shirt.

And we blew bubbles and painted. It was delicious.

It's inevitable you'll get sand down your shorts and ocean water seeping places, but that makes for great memories. Sometimes it's not just about getting the picture, it's about making it. I like to leave myself notes. Like, always check the dump bin, chances are there's a gem like this waiting for it's demise. Could you believe I almost deleted it?

Just a quick background (because you don't just come here for the pictures) This is my cousin and his gorgeous wife and little one. He's studying architecture and took me on a little tour of his favorite buildings downtown. It was a little bit of structural heaven. He sees buildings like I see pictures. I had to stop because I could have posted just about every picture from this day.

Good thing I don't have to decide which one you're hanging on your wall.

Beware what you do in front of me...I just might blog it ;)

Sometimes things fall right into place

One things for sure, you never know just what life's going to throw at you. Sometimes you've got your plan and poof, it's gone. Take for instance my dearest friend's family. We had the stars align in their busy schedule for family pictures, leaving a two hour slot to get in and get out. When we thought we were getting sunshine and fall leaves; what we got was cold, bitter, SNOWY fall leaves. It turned out to be my favorite session to date. Maybe because they all wore their favorite hoodies, or the rare beauty of fall leaves dusted in snow, or maybe because this familiy is a family that has fun no matter what storm is trying to snow on their pictures.

Note to self: Be sure to ask participants whether they are afraid of heights before having significant other hoist into tree.

What fear?

Just a small side story...after celebrating a significant anniversary I found out they did not have a wedding picture of just the two of them hanging in their house. Of course it became my personal mission to get an image of just the two of them for their walls. Sorry newleyweds, you ain't got nothin' on these two.

There are times when things line up in a row. The perfect light, the perfect location, the perfect family for such an occasion. Not that amazing things don't happen when everything goes south (keep watching the blog for that one) but it's easier for others to see. I don't seem like such a geek giggling to myself with glee when I see a lone patch of fall leaves with the most delicious sunlight streaming through. It's with a little sadness I post, as this is the last of my Kansas City families. I truly do feel a little connected to you all, so much so that I (if just for a moment) played with the idea of someday living there. But, my adventures are fated to continue here, and there, and everywhere.
Enough rambling, I will just start it off saying that I love beautiful light.

There is something special about little girls. This particular one was not only stylish, but had the most beautiful curly hair. Now, would you like to know where she got it from? Yup, Mom's a bit of a stunner too. She's also halfway through her pregnancy. I'm just saying it for the rest of us who were bloated and miserable...so no fair. I'm so happy they came to have pictures despite Dad away on business and little one having been sick that day. They are beautiful and truly some of my favorites (why don't my little boys ever look this sweet?) which is why there's so many. It's all in the details on this one...

It wasn't until this one that you can see the remnants of not feeling so well.

Now, to introduce the coolest family. We went to a really fun part of Kansas City I had never seen. It happened to be an eighth birthday that day as well. The first ten minutes of meeting the kids they wouldn't glance in my direction. I think they warmed up seeing as on the way home they asked Mom if I could come to the birthday dinner too. That completely made my night. Thanks for thinking of me. It was fun being able to look back going through your pictures.

Not really a word, but thats what I would call this particular family shoot. We found a gigantic pile of rocks. There was climbing, jumping, smiling, laughing, running and some kind of one-handed standing. It was a perfect evening, with perfect weather, perfect location. You guys rocked this shoot; no pun intended. Even if it was for just an hour or two, thanks for letting me be a part of your life.

No one told me you shouldn't wear peep toes when tromping through a field that was probably infested with chiggers. I also thought this one deserved to be big on the blog. If you can't see it all, I'm sorry, but it's such a shame they have to be so small.

It's fun meeting new families. I really enjoy getting to know people and getting interesting pictures with a story or two behind them. These were feeling black and white (never mind not wanting to post without knowing my color is spot on) Such a fun family. We raced the sun going down that night, fought gigantic spiders, and braved watefalls and bridges. And they thought we were just going to take some family pictures ;)

It's no secret I'm a candid junkie. This one was my favorite. Gotta love the way they look at eachother.

Somehow we ended up in this beautiful field, on a giant pile, of giant rocks. Fantastic weather. Beautiful sky. Ah-mazing family. This was my first here. I'm disclaimering: I've got no photoshop and this computer apparently isn't fond of my pictures using up it's hard drive. After little fanfare, we (meaning my youngest and I) arrived. Tired, but not too banged up. We are ready for some serious picture taking to being. I couldn't help myself in the Salt Lake Airport, there's a kids play area and the planes seemed to line up perfectly.

*There should be some sneak peeks very soon. I had a great evening in some beautiful Missouri (or was it Kansas?) countryside with a cool family, a pile of rocks and a '69 Camaro.

As if bathtime wasn't adventure enough. As of a few hours ago we're (as in the three pictured above and moi) are headed on a jetplane to the sunnyside city of San Diego. I'm giving the heads up to my peeps (yes, I just used the word peeps) in Las Vegas and the so-cal area because I've got some very limited availabilities. It will be perfect timing for Christmas card fare and even better for my newest passion...canvas. October 23rd through November 1st are my dates. Give me a shout, the spots are filling.

Sometimes you just have to chalk things up to luck. Being able to meet a friend of a friend who happens to be amazingly gorgeous and talented (nice and funny to boot) AND get to take her pictures? Priceless. Meet my latest. If you have been put off getting pictures, here's a good reason not to do it any longer. This session lasted a total of 20 minutes and as she put it "painless". Fun and beautiful. It doesn't get any better than that.

Phew, these have been in the vault for too dang long. These kids don't just look good either, they are talented with a capital T.

Gee, don't know where they got their looks...

Funny story really quick...Otto (my three year old) broke her in her first Sunday as nursery leader by puking in her skirt because he threw such a huge fit. He has since turned his ways around and loves her with all his heart. We are sooo happy Otto has an awesome teacher.

What can I say (at risk of sounding like a broken record here) I LOVE this silo.

Fun jumping pictures. I find it's a good way to loosen everyone up, and end up getting some fun pictures too.

I've been trying to find MY black and white...the one that feels like me. Well, I think this is it. A little bit of old with a little bit of new.

We found some chesapeak puppies to play with. I've still got some family shots to post, but for now the candids caught a little piece of my heart.

I believe there are still some available for anyone interested.

I'm now thinking it's just mandatory, Mom and Dad should have their own pictures every time. These really are some of my favorites from family sessions.

It's fair weekend here in town. It feels a little like a carnival at my house these days as well. I've learned that to work on my post-processing, I've got to get away from the carnival. Find my happy place if you will. My flower arranging teacher (yes, I took it; no, I wasn't very good) told me once that she could tell I was sad from my arrangement that day. Seeing as we were all doing the same thing, I looked around and realized that mine did in fact give an air of sadness that no one elses had. Who knew. From then on, I've learned to create in a good/relaxed mood. Things go better, and turn out, well, a little better than "fair".

On with my latest senior session. So much fun. These don't scream senior session to me...sure hope that's OK.

It's not often that I share my neurosis with the general public. I was thinking since yesterday (i.e. a little obsessive/compulsively thinking) that we haven't have any good family pictures for a while. Tons of one, or two, rarely three of us together. But none with Mom. I brought out my trusty tripod while the kids were riding bikes during a break in the rain. Viola! A family picture is born. We are all looking at the camera, and perhaps smiling. Not my normal preferred portrait, but when you're fighting a Montana rainstorm, three kids under 5, and a ten second delay you'll settle for something priceless as this. Sorry, the outtakes and all their shamefull glory are mine alone.

It's getting really late. I could stay up all night editing. It just hit me that this family has so many great ones I am prying (is that how you spell it?) myself out of my chair so I can get some sleep so I can finish tomorrow; and yet, my family has no recent family pictures. I better get on that...but for now, here is the coolest family...with the coolest pictures. Mom wanted lots of green, I don't think there could be any more. Did you know there are tree museums? We went to one and got some pratically edible pictures of some long time family friends. It was quite the adventure. There were literally acres of green. And as usual, too many to narrow down.

Every time I see this I think "Off with their heads!". But, really, there's something I like.

LOVE this tree. It was big, old, and was perfect for climbing.

For second, I'm going off on a little tangent. We all remember our senior pictures vividy. Mine was four or five outfits, in front of four or five backgrounds in a studio. I distinctly remember him micromanaging my poses..."lift your face four millimeters...hold your breath...let me put this piece of hair back". They turned out great. The ones I liked the most looked like some other version of me. Different. Posed. Did I mention the taffeta and pearls over the mirror?...oh yes, it did happened. If only today me, could go back to then me, and find someone who could take a picture of the real me. Thank you A. for letting me get the real you.

I recently had the priviledge of taking new headshots of the entire Cornerstone Realty crew. We headed out to one of their recent listings (a gorgeous home on the river if anyone is interested) and found some great light. If anyone is looking for a great realtor in the valley, we know a few.

Wow. It's fun to shoot families. It's fun to see where the shoot takes us. This one took us into a swamp infested with mosquitoes. Enough to turn the most amicable child to the dark side. We perservered and got some great shots. I think I'll call them my fab five. They got to decide where they wanted their portraits taken and it looks like they chose wisely. We'll give the parents a little credit for their awesome kids ;) Thanks you guys, it was fun. Well worth all the bug bites...

Just a quick photoshop side note. I'm loving the new "stuff" that makes your pictures look old. We grew up on slides. Boxes and boxes of slide. Each roll was different. Some faded certain colors, and each picture seemed to have it's own personality. Nothing was vibrant, sharp and super saturated. They were imperfectly real. That is what I've been going for...perfectly imperfect. Don't be shy, leave a comment on what YOU think.

I'd completely forgotten some photos. These are "the cousins". My crazy side of the family has seven grandkids four and under. (The other side has 25...the oldest just turned 17) It's always an adventure to get together. We thought it would be fun to get grandkid photos while we were in Las Vegas. There is the coolest play area in a new mall there. The kids had an awesome time, which means I was a sweaty mess by the end. Can't say there are any formal portraits per say, but I can say I got their personalities. When they know you it seems they run faster when they see the camera coming.

What makes a special day?

In the course of photography blog sifting, I find a lot of photographers who specialize in weddings. I fully agree it is a special day, one worth catching every detail and moment on film. But then I started thinking (not that thinking thing again...) that there are so many special days AFTER marriage. It isn't the end all of end alls...it's the beginning (if you're lucky enough) of even better days. After dragging middle child back to bed last night I was awake thinking that I would treat tomorrow like my special day. After all, it is. I get to spend it with my kids. Mowing the lawn. Hanging out. Not doing too much of anything important. Isn't that worth taking beautiful pictures? Catching the details? The moments?

Don't get me wrong, my wedding day was perfect right down to the mexican food and the beach, but why shouldn't there be more of everyday life?

There's not nearly as many as I had hoped. It's a slow night for blogging.

It's great being able to sit with a client and hear what they really think of each picture. Good and bad, I love to hear it all. As my sister says, "you have weird taste". That's understood, and taken it into account when deciding which pictures to show you when all is said and done. Well, we came up with a great collection for my friend's wall, so I'm sharing a sneak peek.

Ok, so it's no secret everything goes through the photoshop mill. Some, more than others. But what comes out can range so far in so many directions. My friend wants hers to look the pottery barn pictures...which translates to subtle balck and white. I decided to try my own take with a funky vintage/not quite vintage wash. I think it works with the colors and the feel of these...

The next has a tint to it, plus a protrait type glow. ( I just have to add, isn't this the funnest familiy? I know funnest isn't a word, but geez, they are in the middle of packing with no sleep and they look awesome)

For any clients, if you want a certain look to let me know so the shoot can geared in that direction. If you look through the posts, every shoot has it's own feel. I usually go with my gut on processing, but if there's something you have in mind, it's always a possibility. See, I do installments posting pictures from sessions. The first is usually a teaser, one or two that jump out at me. Then I let it roll once I've finished with a session. (Yes, that means I'm finished guys...it'll ship out Monday) First off, I would like to thank Photoshop Lightroom, without which, I would have never finished this quickly. Second, I will say there is a connection with this family. We're cuzins. It always helps to know your subject so you can throw the jokes that will really get them smiling. It was also just fun hanging out at the beach. So, here goes...

A friend from waaaay back in the day and I got together to hang out in the sun for the perfect day. No really, 80-ish degrees, slight breeze and hours in the shade watching my older ones play. Seeking the sun

Everytime I go to San Diego I wonder if it's to seek some sun. I find lately while taking pictures I look for it. No more hiding in the shadows for me. It was an absolute blast shooting at the beach.
These are the first pictures I took off over 12 Gigs of memory cards...translation: thats running over a thousand pictures. I won't run down the stats for you, but there will be lots of activity on this otherwise stagnant blog in the next couple of weeks. Just thought I'd share a sneek peek.

Oh, and to address another thing. Generally the pictures I find absolutely captivating, the person in them tends to think they don't look their best. Jess, don't kill me, but this picture makes me smile every time because it's so you. Little G may look confused, but hey, he doesn't have a clue who I am or why I was pointing this black orb at him for an hour.

There is something about turning three that is so vibrant. The dandilions were in full bloom (the proof was on our backsides) and not once did he sit still and smile for the camera. That makes for complete awesomeness. *edited to add more pictures* Man, I want to be three again.

Love newborns. Love 'em, love 'em, love 'em. There is a very talented photographer in San Diego who does nothing but newborns (would post her site but can't find it at the moment) and I think I could agree. They are awesome. Fresh, new, life. That being said, I found this newborn shoot different. It's a strange thing being able to pick what your pictures will "process" into. Do you go black and white? Are they bold and sharp (my preferred method usually)? Sometimes they just let you know. I can't explain why, but these all were politely asking to be soft and muted. Can't say no when someone asks so nicely now, can I?
